Troy Deeney, once a source of discontent among Arsenal fans for criticizing their team, has now offered praise to the Gunners and their manager, Mikel Arteta. The infamous accusation of lacking "cojones" was a defining moment, setting the stage for subsequent clashes between Watford and Arsenal.
The Gunners, fueled by Deeney's remark, utilized it as additional motivation in subsequent encounters. Yet, the underlying truth in his assertion remained evident. However, Mikel Arteta's leadership has seen a remarkable evolution, with Arsenal establishing themselves as a formidable force against both minor and major opponents.
In his column for The Sun, Deeney reflects on the shift:
“It’s well remembered that I once accused Arsene Wenger’s team of lacking ‘cojones’ after my Watford side beat them at Vicarage Road. I certainly cannot imagine taking the p*** out of this Gunners team in the same way. I wouldn’t rate my chances of bullying them, either."
Acknowledging Arteta's impact, Deeney recognizes the significant improvement in the team's spirit and unity:
“Arteta was a serious competitor as a player, and his team are the embodiment of how he used to play, not that some of his old team-mates shared the same level of desire. It’s great testament to Arteta that he has created an Arsenal team far superior in spirit and solidarity to the sides he played in, who were technically better in many areas.”
