A Manchester City fan has been apprehended by the Greater Manchester Police at the Etihad Stadium for allegedly making offensive gestures referencing the Munich Air Disaster during the Manchester derby.
Manchester City secured a 3-1 victory against the Red Devils in their recent Premier League clash, with Phil Foden netting two goals in the second half to overturn an initial deficit.
The arrest follows an incident during the match where a supporter in the home section was observed making an aeroplane gesture towards the visiting fans, alluding to the tragic events of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.
This disaster claimed the lives of eight Manchester United players among the 23 fatalities, an event still commemorated annually on February 6th.
Notably, among the survivors was the late Sir Bobby Charlton, a World Cup-winning footballer who passed away in October at the age of 86.
Footage capturing the gesture circulated on social media platforms, eliciting widespread condemnation.
Additionally, subsequent footage depicted the individual involved being escorted away by law enforcement officials. Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed the arrest of a man on suspicion of engaging in inappropriate chanting related to the tragedy.
