Manchester United's star midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, has been granted an early departure from Portugal's squad following their triumph over Sweden in a friendly match.
It was learnt that Fernandes exhibited his prowess by scoring a goal and providing an assist in Portugal's commanding 5-2 victory over Sweden, held in Guimaraes on Thursday.
Stellar Performance and Early Departure
Fernandes was a pivotal figure in the starting lineup, alongside Manchester City's Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva, Fulham's Joao Palhinha, and goalkeeper Rui Patricio, all of whom completed the full 90 minutes of the friendly encounter.
Demonstrating his effectiveness, Fernandes found the back of the net before half-time, contributing significantly to Portugal's lead, which was further bolstered by Bruma in the second half. Goncalo Ramos sealed Portugal's victory with a fifth goal, interspersed with strikes from Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres and Gustaf Nilsson.
Portugal's Unbeaten Streak Continues
Under the guidance of coach Roberto Martinez, Portugal's dominance persists, with 11 consecutive victories since his tenure began, during which they have scored an impressive 49 goals while conceding just four. Despite this success, Martinez revealed post-match that Fernandes, along with Dias, Silva, and Palhinha, among others, would be released early from the squad and would not participate in the upcoming fixture against Slovenia.
Rest and Recovery Ahead
The decision to release Fernandes early comes as he looks to recuperate ahead of Manchester United's upcoming match against Brentford on March 30. Similarly, Dias and Silva will focus on their next challenge as Manchester City takes on Arsenal in a crucial Premier League encounter on March 31. This strategic move aims to ensure the players' fitness and readiness for their respective club commitments amidst the demanding football calendar.
