President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to reopen Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger and to lift other sanctions against the country with immediate effect.
Compliance with ECOWAS Decisions
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, conveyed this decision in a statement on Wednesday, March 13.
This action is in compliance with the decisions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, held in Abuja. During this summit, ECOWAS leaders reached an agreement to lift economic sanctions against the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
Specific Directives
President Tinubu has specifically directed the lifting of the following sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger:
- Reopening of land and air borders with the Republic of Niger
- Lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea
The decision to impose sanctions on the Republic of Niger stemmed from the military coup that took place on July 26, 2023, resulting in the toppling of President Mohamed Bazoum. As a response, ECOWAS had implemented various sanctions on the country.
In light of the ECOWAS Authority’s decision, President Tinubu's directive signifies a significant step towards normalizing relations with the Republic of Niger and easing the economic impact of the previously imposed sanctions.
This move is expected to contribute to regional stability and enhance diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger, as well as further bolster the cooperative spirit among ECOWAS member states.
President Tinubu's decision to reopen borders and lift sanctions against the Republic of Niger aligns with the collaborative efforts within the ECOWAS community to address regional challenges through peaceful and diplomatic means.
