Former Chelsea coach, Jose Mourinho, has taken a dig at Mikel Arteta's defensive approach in Arsenal's recent match against Manchester City.
Defensive Strategy vs. Success
Mourinho questioned the effectiveness of Arteta's defensive tactics, suggesting that they are not a guaranteed formula for success. Arsenal adopted a defensive stance in their encounter with City, securing a goalless draw despite having only 28 percent possession.
Minimal Possession, Maximum Defense
Despite the low possession stats, Arsenal managed to limit City to just one shot on target, prompting praise for Arteta's strategy from some quarters. However, Mourinho remains skeptical about attributing too much praise to the defensive approach.
Mourinho's Perspective
Reflecting on his own experiences, Mourinho emphasized that defensive tactics, such as "parking the bus," were not always indicative of a masterful strategy. While acknowledging his own victories against Manchester City, Mourinho suggested that defensive play does not necessarily equate to brilliance on the tactical front.
He said: “In my time, it was not a magic strategy. And I won at Manchester City a few times. But it was not an amazing strategy. It was a defensive game. Park the bus. Park the double bus. It was a different perspective."
