Adekunle Gold Shares Story Behind 'Damn Delilah' on 'About 30' Album Anniversary

Nigerian singer-songwriter Adekunle Gold has expressed remorse over creating a song about an ex-girlfriend who broke his heart. The artist shared his sentiments on social media, marking the sixth anniversary of his debut album, "About 30."

Adekunle Gold posted the album cover on his X handle, captioning it, "Happy 6 years Anniversary to my beautiful piece of Art. #About30." A fan responded by reposting the album cover, jokingly writing, "Delilah will never forget this album." Adekunle Gold replied, "She passed. Sometimes I feel bad for making that record."

A curious fan asked the singer to share the full story behind the song, prompting Adekunle Gold to recount the experience. "You people," he began, "I have told the story many times. Anyways, I was in a relationship with a girl who had a boyfriend (I didn't know). Me, I fell hard, but the babe was playing me. Long story short, one Saturday morning, I got a threat call from a random guy saying I should back off, I should never speak to his woman again. I called the babe immediately, and she had blocked me everywhere. Lol. I got so heartbroken and made 'Damn Delilah'."

The song "Damn Delilah" is featured on Adekunle Gold's debut album, "About 30," which was released in 2018. The album received critical acclaim and commercial success, with "Damn Delilah" being one of the standout tracks.

Adekunle Gold's reflection on his past heartbreak and regret over creating the song highlights the complexities of art and personal experiences. While the song may have been a cathartic expression of his emotions at the time, it also serves as a reminder of the pain and vulnerability that often accompanies creative expression.
