The Nigerian national team announced on its X account that Nathan Tella, a midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen, has withdrawn from the upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to family reasons.
In response, Coach Finidi George has called up Ibrahim Olawoyin, a talented midfielder from Caykur Rizespor of Turkey, to join the squad.
"WCQ Camp Update: Nathan Tella of Bayer Leverkusen has excused himself from the upcoming WCQ matches due to family reasons. Coach Finidi George has now called up Ibrahim Olawoyin of Caykur Rizespor of Turkey," the national team announced on its X account.
This development comes as a surprise to many, as Tella has been an integral part of the Super Eagles squad in recent times. However, the team's coach, Finidi George, has moved quickly to replace him with Olawoyin, who is expected to bring his impressive form to the national team.
The Super Eagles will face South Africa on June 7, 2024, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, before traveling to Abidjan to take on Benin Republic on June 10, 2024, at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
Tella's absence comes as a surprise, given his recent form and importance to the team. However, Coach George's swift response in calling up Olawoyin demonstrates the team's depth and preparedness for the challenges ahead. The Super Eagles will be seeking to build on their unbeaten start in Group C, having drawn their opening two matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
