Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has shared his thoughts on Gareth Southgate's decision to leave Cole Palmer out of the starting lineup in England's Euro 2024 opener against Serbia. England emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, courtesy of Jude Bellingham's first-half goal from a Bukayo Saka cross.
As a guest pundit on the BBC's coverage of the match, Fabregas, 37, questioned Southgate's tactics, particularly the decision to bench Palmer. "If you send the message in putting in a defensive midfielder or an extra defender to cover the result, you will as a player feel it," Fabregas said.
"Mentally you start going back, dropping more. But instead, if you put an offensive player, Palmer, let's say, up the pitch and controlling the ball in the final third, I think the players get so much more comfortable."
Fabregas' comments suggest that he believes Southgate's decision may have had a negative impact on the team's mentality and performance. By opting for a defensive approach, Fabregas argues that the players may have felt more pressure and become more cautious in their play. In contrast, he suggests that introducing an attacking player like Palmer could have allowed the team to control the game and feel more comfortable on the pitch.
