Former Chelsea Midfielder John Obi Mikel Criticizes Andre Villas-Boas' Management Style
John Obi Mikel, a Chelsea legend, has spoken out about Andre Villas-Boas' tenure at the club, stating that the manager's attempt to assert his authority led to him losing the support of the players.
Villas-Boas, now the president of Porto, was hailed as the "Next Jose Mourinho" after achieving significant success with Porto in the 2010/11 season, winning the league, cup, and Europa League.
However, his stint at Chelsea was marked by difficulties, particularly in terms of man-management. Jason Cundy, a former Chelsea defender, had criticized Villas-Boas' ability to connect with players, and Mikel concurred, stating, "No, it wasn't."
Mikel elaborated on Villas-Boas' approach, suggesting that his time spent alongside Jose Mourinho at Porto had influenced his management style. "He saw the club and the players, he was friends with the players, and then he thought, 'OK, now I'm a manager, I need to do something, I need to show them that they have to respect me.'"
However, Mikel believes that Villas-Boas went about it the wrong way, ultimately leading to a breakdown in relationships with the players.
