Why I Dropped James Maddison And Jack Grealish - Southgate Explains Tough Calls on England Squad

England national team manager Gareth Southgate has addressed the notable exclusions from the preliminary squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.

When asked about the omission of James Maddison and Jack Grealish, Southgate stated: "Madders and Jack both give us something different, so it was a tough call." He went on to praise the players, saying: "Both of those boys are fantastic characters and great teammates."

The preliminary squad, announced ahead of friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland, excludes several high-profile players, including Maddison, Grealish, Harry Maguire, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford, Curtis Jones, and Jarrell Quansah.

Southgate's comments highlight the difficult decisions involved in selecting a squad for a major tournament. The final 26-man squad for Euro 2024 is expected to be announced on June 7.

England's fixtures at the 2024 Euro tournament include:

- June 16: Serbia vs. England (Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen)
- June 20: Denmark vs. England (Waldstadion, Frankfurt)
- June 25: England vs. Slovenia (RheinEnergieStadion, Cologne)
