Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino following his impressive performances at Euro 2024.

The Real Sociedad star's last-minute winner against Germany secured Spain's place in the semi-finals, and his talent has caught the eye of Gunners manager Mikel Arteta.

According to The Athletic, Arteta is a "huge admirer" of Merino's abilities. The 28-year-old midfielder offers a blend of technical skill and physicality that could bolster Arsenal's central midfield. This reported interest comes amidst Arsenal's pursuit of another young talent, Nico Williams, Merino's teammate on the Spanish national team. However, Arteta seems willing to make an exception for Merino's experience, given his desire to add a more established presence in midfield.

Merino has been a key player for Real Sociedad since joining the club in 2018. In his six seasons with the Basque side, he has established himself as a leader on and off the pitch. He has made over 190 appearances in La Liga, scoring 20 goals and contributing 22 assists. Last season alone, Merino chipped in with 5 goals in 32 La Liga appearances.

The potential arrival of Merino could have a significant impact on Arsenal's squad dynamic. Declan Rice, another central midfielder, could see a shift in his role with Merino's presence.

Real Sociedad will likely demand a significant transfer fee, with reports suggesting a price tag in the region of £51 million.
