A Brazilian Olympic athlete has been expelled from the Games after leaving the Village for a night out in Paris with her boyfriend.
Ana Carolina Vieira, a swimmer from Brazil, went out without authorization with her boyfriend and fellow swimmer Gabriel Santos after their team was eliminated from the 4X100m freestyle relay. The 22-year-old left the Village to meet Santos on July 26 without permission.
Brazilian media reports that when confronted by the Brazilian Olympic Committee about her actions, Vieira responded abusively and was quickly put on a flight back home.
The governing body of the sport in Brazil described her behavior as "disrespectful and aggressively challenging."
Santos, who was also eliminated in the heats of the men's 4x100 freestyle, faced disciplinary action and has reportedly apologized for breaking the rules.
"The Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA), the COB decided to punish the two athletes for having left the Olympic Village without authorization last Friday," stated the official release from the body.
