Prof. Olorunfemi Olaofe, the former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, was found dead more than three weeks after being kidnapped.
The 79-year-old retired academic was abducted from his residence in Ado-Ekiti on July 9, 2024, along with his security guard. The kidnappers used the professor's car during the abduction, which was later recovered by the police.
The deceased professor’s body was discovered buried in a shallow grave along Airport Road. The exact cause of his death remains ambiguous, with uncertainties about whether he succumbed to natural causes related to his advanced age or was killed by his abductors.
Following the abduction, the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million from the victim's family, which was subsequently reduced to N15 million.
On July 31, Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State, Adeniran Akinwale, confirmed the unfortunate discovery. He stated, "Yes, the professor has been found dead, and we are doing everything possible to exhume the body for burial." The Commissioner also disclosed that several individuals had been arrested in connection with the case. He hinted at possible insider involvement, noting that the security guard employed by Prof. Olaofe might have played a role in orchestrating the kidnapping. "They (abductors) kidnapped the man along with him so that we would not suspect. In the process of rescuing him, we have arrested some people. I can’t say much about the security guard, but at the appropriate time, we will brief the public," the Commissioner of Police elaborated.
