Over 300,000 Fans Petition for Rematch of Germany's Euro 2024 Quarter-Final Against Spain

Disappointment has fueled a fervent fan campaign following Germany's narrow defeat to Spain in a dramatic Euro 2024 quarter-final.

A petition calling for a rematch of the close encounter has garnered over 300,000 signatures, highlighting controversial refereeing decisions that continue to spark debate.

The match, a rollercoaster of emotions, saw Spain emerge victorious 2-1 after extra time.

The first half was a tactical chess match, with both teams cancelling each other out. The deadlock was broken in the 51st minute when Dani Olmo found the net for Spain.

Germany pushed for an equalizer and thought they had their chance when Jamal Musiala's shot struck the hand of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella in the penalty area.

However, referee Anthony Taylor waved away appeals, and a VAR check didn't overturn the decision. This proved to be a major turning point, with many German fans believing a penalty would have shifted the momentum.

Germany's persistence finally paid off in the 89th minute when young star Florian Wirtz equalized, sending the home crowd at the Stuttgart Arena into a frenzy. The match remained tied through regulation time, forcing extra time.

In the 119th minute, substitute Mikel Merino rose highest to head home a cross, sending Spain through to the semi-finals and breaking German hearts.

The closing stages saw Dani Carvajal red-carded for a second yellow card, but it was a mere formality as Spain secured their place in the next round.

While UEFA, the governing body of European football, has previously stated that handballs where the arm is not in an unnatural position would not be penalized, the incident has reignited discussions about the use of VAR and the potential for inconsistencies in its application.
