Brazil Ousted by Uruguay in Tense Copa América Quarterfinal
Tournament favorites Brazil were sent packing from the 2024 Copa América after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Uruguay on Saturday night. The highly anticipated quarterfinal clash at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas lived up to its billing, but ultimately ended scoreless after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
The match was a tight affair, with both defenses holding firm throughout. Uruguay, who had been impressive throughout the group stage, continued their resolute form. Brazil, despite finishing second in their group, showed glimpses of their attacking prowess but were unable to break through the resolute Uruguayan backline.
The sending off of Uruguayan midfielder Nahitan Nández in the 74th minute offered a glimmer of hope for Brazil. However, they couldn't capitalize on the one-man advantage, and the match headed to a penalty shootout.
In the nerve-wracking shootout, both sides missed their first penalties. However, Uruguay converted their next two, while Brazil missed another. The final blow came from Manuel Ugarte, who slotted home the winning penalty to send Uruguay into the semifinals and end Brazil's dream of winning the Copa América on home soil (United States hosted the tournament this year).
