Emiliano Martinez's agent, Gonzalo Goni, dropped a bombshell recently, revealing that the Aston Villa shot-stopper was very close to joining Manchester United last summer. This news comes as a surprise, considering Martinez's eventual move to Villa Park and Manchester United's subsequent signing of Andre Onana.
Martinez's stock soared after his impressive performances for Argentina, culminating in a World Cup victory in Qatar 2022 and a Golden Glove award. This rise in reputation seemingly caught the eye of Manchester United, who were looking to replace David de Gea after his contract expired in 2023.
According to Goni, a deal for Martinez with United appeared close, but the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag changed things. Ten Hag reportedly favored a reunion with his former Ajax goalkeeper, Andre Onana. Onana ultimately signed for Manchester United in July 2023 for a hefty fee reported to be in the region of £47 million.
Martinez, meanwhile, completed his move to Aston Villa in September 2022, solidifying himself as their number one and establishing himself as a fan favorite.
