Javier Milei, President of Argentina, has expressed strong condemnation of the recent vandalism targeting football icon Lionel Messi’s residence in Spain by climate change activists.
On August 6, 2024, a group of vandals illegally entered Messi’s €11 million property located on a Spanish island. They covered the walls with red and black paint, which featured slogans demanding immediate action on climate change. This act of vandalism highlighted the activists’ urgency to address environmental issues through dramatic and confrontational means.
In response, Milei used his official X account to demand that the Spanish government ensure the safety of Argentine citizens living in Spain. He stated, “In Spain, communists who want to ‘murder the rich and abolish the police to end climate change’ vandalised a home of Lionel Messi and his family.” This statement reflects Milei’s view that the perpetrators, whom he characterizes as extremists, are pursuing radical measures to address climate change by attacking symbols of wealth and success.
Milei extended his support to the Messi family, labeling the attack as “cowardly and delusional.” He urged Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government to take decisive steps to protect Argentine citizens residing in Spain. Furthermore, Milei criticized communism as an ideology driven by “envy, hatred and resentment towards the successful,” emphasizing that such beliefs are incompatible with a free and civilized society.
