On August 6, 2024, CP Yusuf Lawal, the State Commissioner of Police in Borno, provided details about the incident to the media. According to Lawal, the arrests took place on August 5 in the Zannari Tamsu area of Maiduguri, following a series of demonstrations that have sparked nationwide attention.

The nine suspects who were taken into custody have been identified as Khalafi Abdulhamid, Mohammed Abubakar, Mohamed Ibrahim, Abba Hassan, Bashir Ahmad, Musa Lawan, Abba Mallam, Habibu Auwal, and Inusa Abdullahi. Their detention comes amidst a broader trend of protests that have seen participants waving foreign flags in various cities across Nigeria.

Since the commencement of the nationwide demonstrations on August 1, similar instances of protesters displaying foreign flags have been reported in several cities, including Kano, Abuja, Kaduna, and Borno. These actions have raised concerns about the motives and affiliations of the protesters, adding complexity to the ongoing unrest in the country.
