IGP Kayode Egbetokun Reports Policeman Killed and Police Stations Torched During #EndBadGovernance Protests

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has reported a tragic incident during the #EndBadGovernance protests that took place on Thursday, August 1. Egbetokun stated that a policeman was killed by hoodlums who had infiltrated the protests. In his press conference held in Abuja, he detailed that some police officers were also injured by these hoodlums, who had disguised themselves as protesters. Additionally, several police stations across the country were set on fire by the rioting mobs.

Egbetokun described the day’s events in major cities as "mass uprising and looting and not protests," emphasizing that they had deviated from peaceful demonstrations. He noted that the leaders of the protests were notably absent despite having been warned by the police, which allowed hoodlums to take control of the situation.

According to Egbetokun, "Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses." He pointed out that in cities such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, there were reports of unprovoked attacks on security personnel. Specifically, he confirmed that "one policeman has been reported murdered and others seriously injured."

In response to these developments, Egbetokun announced that the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert. He assured that the officers are fully mobilized and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to maintain public safety and order.
