In a legal challenge filed in January 2024, Edo and her production company, Minini Empire Productions Limited, sought to establish ownership of the trademarks and copyrights associated with the series. The contention was brought against Nworah and her production company, Giant Creative Media Limited.

However, the Nigerian Copyright Commission and Trademark Registry have decisively ruled against Edo's claims, determining them to be unfounded. The regulatory bodies have upheld the copyright certificates issued to Nworah for both the literary and audiovisual work titled Shanty Town.

This legal victory solidifies Nworah's position as the rightful owner of the intellectual property rights pertaining to the popular Netflix series.
