John Obi Mikel Discusses Romelu Lukaku’s Punctuality Issues at Chelsea
At the age of 37, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has opened up about his experiences with Romelu Lukaku during the Belgian striker's initial tenure at the Premier League club. During a recent visit to Cobham Arena, Chelsea’s training ground, as part of The Obi One Podcast, Mikel provided insights into Lukaku’s early challenges with punctuality.
Mikel revealed that Lukaku, who first joined Chelsea as a young striker in 2011, had issues with arriving on time for both training sessions and matches. “Someone who is always late. It was Romelu Lukaku when he came,” Mikel stated. He elaborated on Lukaku's situation, noting that despite the punctuality issues, Lukaku was a “lovely guy” who engaged in conversations and recognized his need to improve.
Reflecting on their interactions, Mikel explained, “We had a chat and he realized that he needs to get better with time.” According to Mikel, this realization was pivotal for Lukaku, who subsequently made the necessary adjustments to his routine. “And then he sorted it out, and he was fine,” Mikel concluded, emphasizing that Lukaku's punctuality improved over time.
