The Kano State Mobile Court has mandated the detention of 632 individuals who participated in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
The court's decision comes in response to allegations that these participants engaged in the vandalism of public and government properties during the demonstration.
The defendants face a range of charges including criminal conspiracy, theft, unlawful assembly, incitement to disturbance, trespass, and mischief by fire. According to Salisu Tahir, the State Director of Public Prosecution, these offenses were committed during the protest on August 1. Tahir asserted that, on this date, the defendants were involved in unauthorized entry and damage to various government and public properties within the state.
Tahir detailed that the actions of the defendants were in violation of multiple sections of the Penal Code, specifically sections 97 (criminal conspiracy), 287 (theft), 229 (trespass), 336 (incitement to disturbance), 349 (unlawful assembly), and 247 (mischief by fire).
During the court session, some defendants acknowledged their involvement and pleaded guilty, while others refuted the charges and pleaded not guilty. Following the court's decision to remand the defendants, the session, overseen by three Senior Judicial officials, was adjourned to August 19 for further proceedings and a detailed hearing.
