Manchester United supporters believe that Bernardo Silva should have been sent off before scoring the crucial equaliser in the Community Shield, which ultimately contributed to Manchester City's penalty shootout victory.
Silva, who had been substituted in for James McAtee in the 80th minute, received a yellow card just five minutes after his introduction. However, many United fans argue that this offense warranted a red card instead.
At the time of Silva’s entry, United was leading 1-0 thanks to Alejandro Garnacho’s goal earlier in the second half. Shortly after coming onto the field, Silva made a late challenge on Garnacho. As Silva pressed Garnacho, he made a forceful tackle, catching the Argentine forward's leg after Garnacho had already passed the ball.
The challenge was reviewed by VAR, which deemed it worthy of only a yellow card. This decision did little to placate the disgruntled United fans who felt that Silva’s action deserved a more severe punishment.
Despite United's efforts, they were unable to secure a victory against City. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, and City ultimately triumphed 7-6 in the penalty shootout at Wembley.
