In a deeply emotional account shared on Facebook on August 27, 2024, Chinenye Anyanwu, a Nigerian woman, recounted how her marital joy was abruptly shattered when her husband disappeared just three weeks after their court wedding in 2019.
Chinenye described how her husband, Olumide, vanished under suspicious circumstances, leading her to believe he was a scammer. According to her, Olumide left for Lagos on what was supposed to be a brief one-week trip but has not returned since.
Two weeks into his absence, Chinenye discovered she was pregnant and informed Olumide. However, she was met with an indifferent response, as he did not share in her excitement. She recounted, "On 2nd August 2019, I walked into a marriage registry and exchanged marital vows with a man who legally became my husband after that exercise. Everything was fine. Everyone was happy for us."
Her happiness was short-lived. On August 27, 2019, just three weeks after their marriage, Olumide left for Lagos and has never returned. "His trip was supposed to be just one week but guess what, he hasn't returned till date," she revealed.
As the weeks turned into months, Chinenye uncovered a series of shocking truths. She discovered that nearly everyone who attended the wedding on Olumide’s behalf had been manipulated, hired, or deceived into participating, including close relatives like his uncle and the uncle's wife, as well as the food vendor and photographer. To her disbelief, she realized that Olumide's entire family had been part of his deceptive scheme. She shared that their phone numbers have been unreachable ever since.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Chinenye lamented how her husband had taken everything he could access during their brief marriage. She noted, "Virtuous woman don't hide her money and assets from her husband, right?" Days turned into weeks, and then into months, as she came to terms with her new reality. She accepted responsibility for her mistakes and resolved to rebuild her life for herself and her unborn child. However, the emotional and psychological toll of the experience has been overwhelming.
Chinenye candidly shared the ongoing struggles she faces, even five years after the marriage ended. "My marriage lasted just 3 weeks but it's been 5 years of trying to fix the damages caused by that mistake," she wrote. The impact of that "one error" has reverberated through every aspect of her life—mentally, spiritually, career-wise, financially, and emotionally. She often questions how she allowed such a situation to unfold.
Her post reveals the deep pain she endures as she tries to move forward, despite setbacks that make progress feel elusive. "I took stock of the past five years of my life and it seems God is punishing me for making one mistake," she expressed. Despite her efforts to return to normalcy, she feels trapped in a cycle of progress and regression, as though she is merely "fading away yet shining from the outer." The severity of her suffering for "just one mistake" weighs heavily on her.
Chinenye expressed her frustration at feeling isolated in her pain, as others perceive her as strong and resilient. She pleaded with God for understanding and relief, questioning why her punishment has been so long and harsh for merely trusting and committing to a man she didn’t truly know. "I didn't kill anyone. I didn't break the law of the land, so why am I in jail?" she asked, reflecting on the severity of her situation.
Despite everything, Chinenye has chosen not to curse Olumide, stating, "May the universe judge between you and I accordingly." Her concluding plea to God reflects the deep anguish and sense of injustice she feels: "Dear God, I think it is enough. It is."
