Nigerian singer and songwriter Omah Lay has asserted that his musical style is being imitated by his colleagues both within Nigeria and internationally. He expressed that he pioneered a new sound in the Afrobeats genre, which many artists are now adopting.
In a recent interview with Billboard, Omah Lay stated, “The artists coming out from Nigeria right now, not just Nigeria but Afrobeats in general are taking a bit of my stuff, the stuff I started, everybody tryna copy something.” He suggested that this trend is not limited to Nigeria but extends to the broader Afrobeats community.
Omah Lay also criticized the current state of Afrobeats, particularly the approach taken by its leading figures. He remarked, “I don’t think I am happy with what the pioneers of Afrobeats are doing right now. The front guys are watering it down by just chasing the bags.” He lamented that the pursuit of commercial success has compromised the quality and authenticity of the genre.
Further expressing his concerns, Omah Lay shared his disappointment with the music being played in clubs, noting, “I can’t remember the last time I heard a proper Afrobeats Song. It’s now Amapiano in Afrobeats clubs, not a proper Afrobeats song.” This statement underscores his dissatisfaction with the current direction of the genre, which he feels has strayed from its roots.
