Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni, has recently voiced her frustration over the lack of conflict and excitement among female singers in the music industry, taking to social media to share her thoughts.
On August 15, 2024, the artist posted a video on Instagram, humorously encouraging her female colleagues to inject more drama into their interactions, much like their male counterparts.
In her video, Teni expressed dissatisfaction with what she perceives as a dull atmosphere in the female sector of the industry. She noted the apparent reluctance of singers such as Tems and Ayra Starr to engage in friendly rivalry, humorously referencing their inability to acknowledge each other. She said, “I have said it before and I will say it again. This female industry is too boring, it’s too boring! Tell me why Tems and Ayra Starr no fit see themselves and tell themselves, ‘Your papa, your papa papa.’”
Teni went on to playfully suggest that a bit of controversy could liven things up and lead to eventual collaboration. She highlighted the unity often seen among male artists, who may feud but eventually come together for the sake of the music. Referring to fellow artists like Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, she quipped, "Tell me why I no fit dey see Tiwa Savage and tell her ‘wetin dey do you?’ Shey we don’t see what’s going on on the other side, everybody is just here doing love, sometimes e be like say make I just give Yemi Alade headbutt. Make we see ourselves for outside, make security separate us.”
Teni concluded her remarks by advocating for a blend of drama and collaboration in the female music space. She humorously suggested that a little conflict wouldn't prevent future partnerships but would instead add excitement to the scene. “Let us spice this thing up and collaborate later. Fighting does not mean that we won’t collaborate later, but make we give them saint Obi for this music, I dey tell you. Let’s give them drama, proper action film,” she added.
Teni's light-hearted appeal reflects her desire to see a more dynamic and entertaining environment among female artists, one that mirrors the energy and rivalries often seen on the male side of the industry.
