A mysterious illness has struck the community of Gidinye in Nasarawa State, resulting in the tragic loss of five children. The victims, all from farming families, died within a 24-hour period after exhibiting symptoms of stomach aches, vomiting, and purging on August 5 and 6, 2024.
According to a community leader, the children had been working on their family farms before falling ill. The sudden and unexplained nature of their deaths has raised concerns among local residents and authorities.
Comrade Samuel Akala, Publicity Secretary of the Migili Youth Association, has appealed to the government and relevant agencies to take immediate action to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the cause of the children's deaths, stating, "The circumstances that resulted in the sudden death of these children in Idah, Gidinye community on Tuesday, 6th August calls for forensic findings."
Akala further urged, "I suggest the Center for Disease Control through PHCDA be invited to carry out disease surveillance in Keana and Obi communities where there are reported cases of acute diarrhoea, vomiting and death of children in the past few days." He also expressed concern about the potential spread of the outbreak, saying, "I do hope this sporadic outbreak of disease does not affect a wide range of population in this part of the state while the clinical investigation lingers."
