On Monday, August 5, despite a 24-hour curfew imposed on the Jos/Bukuru metropolis in Plateau State, groups of determined youths took to the streets, defying the restrictions to protest and attempt to loot businesses.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang had enacted the curfew the previous day in response to unruly behavior by some protesters. According to the Nigerian Tribune, youths from Bauchi Road, Angwan Togo, Nasarawa, and Dilimi ignored the curfew and filled the streets, chanting anti-government slogans. Their protests included attempts to march toward the city center and terminus with the goal of looting commercial premises.
Security forces clashed with these protesters, particularly in the Dilimi area of Jos North local government. The combined efforts of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) and the police struggled to manage the situation effectively.
The situation quickly became tense, with sporadic gunfire causing residents to seek immediate cover to avoid stray bullets. In response, a heavy security presence has been established throughout the Jos/Bukuru metropolis, with officers actively patrolling markets and business areas. At the Terminus market, both OPSH and police have been maintaining a constant watch over key areas, including corporate establishments, to prevent further looting and ensure public safety.
