The suspect, Pastor Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi, is accused of fatally stabbing his wife, Ogechukwu Okafor. This was confirmed in a statement by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Ify Obinabo, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
The incident occurred on August 13, 2024, but was reported to the ministry by the deceased’s family over the weekend. The family raised concerns about inconsistencies in the husband's account and alleged threats he made. Pastor Ibeabuchi, who is from the Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area, claimed that his wife had fallen from a four-story building and died.
However, the deceased’s uncle, Mr. Samuel Onuorah, disputed this version of events. While seeking justice from the Women Affairs Commissioner, Mr. Onuorah stated that the family discovered Ogechukwu had been stabbed in the neck and chest when they visited the mortuary where her body was kept. This led them to believe that she had not died from a fall, but had been attacked by her husband.
The family also accused Pastor Ibeabuchi of planning to use their newborn baby for ritual purposes. They claim that during a struggle over the baby, Elijah allegedly stabbed his wife and scraped her palm.
The family has called on the state government to ensure justice is served for their daughter.
In response, Hon. Ify Obinabo, Commissioner for Women Affairs, called on stakeholders, women’s groups, human rights activists, and social media users to support the government’s efforts to secure justice for Ogechukwu. She urged the public to raise their voices and assured that the governor’s wife would be informed to ensure the matter is fully addressed.
