Raphaël Varane, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 31. 
The French defender, who recently signed with Serie A side Como, made the decision to end his career following a serious knee injury.
Varane’s exit from the sport comes as a shock to many, given his relatively young age for retirement. His time at Como, which was expected to be the final chapter in his storied career, was cut short before it even truly began due to the severity of his injury.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Varane made 479 appearances across various clubs and netted 21 goals. His career highlights include long and successful spells at both Real Madrid and Manchester United.
At Real Madrid, Varane established himself as one of the most dominant defenders in European football, contributing to the team’s numerous victories. After his time in Spain, he joined Manchester United, where he continued to display his world-class defensive skills. His brief tenure at Como, though promising, was unfortunately marred by injury, leading to his early departure from the game.
Varane’s career is decorated with a remarkable array of trophies. During his time with Real Madrid, he secured 4 UEFA Champions League titles, 3 La Liga championships, and a Copa del Rey, among other honors.
Additionally, he was part of the teams that lifted 4 FIFA Club World Cups and 3 UEFA Super Cups. His success wasn’t confined to Spain, as he also enjoyed triumphs in England, including winning the FA Cup and the EFL Cup with Manchester United. On the international stage, Varane’s crowning achievement was helping France win the 2018 FIFA World Cup, followed by the 2021 UEFA Nations League title
