The Super Eagles of Nigeria have strengthened their position in Group D for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, advancing significantly after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded them a 3-0 victory over Libya.
This decision stemmed from an incident on October 15, 2024, when the Nigerian team was delayed for more than 20 hours at Al Abaq airport due to logistical issues upon arrival in Libya, which prevented the match from taking place. Following an investigation, CAF determined that Libya’s Football Federation had breached AFCON regulations, leading to Nigeria’s awarded points and a 3-0 scoreline. Libya was also fined $50,000 by CAF as part of the ruling.
Nigeria currently leads Group D with 10 points, accumulating three wins and one draw across four matches. This result puts them just a step away from securing qualification for the AFCON 2025 tournament, which will take place in Morocco. The next rounds of matches will determine if Nigeria can officially secure their place in the continental tournament.
