
JOEL MATIP ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL AT 33
Former Liverpool and Cameroon defender Joel Matip has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a distinguished 15-year career.
Matip, who departed Liverpool in the summer following the expiration of his contract, accumulated an impressive 492 senior appearances, including 201 games for the Reds. His tenure at Anfield was marked by significant success, including the Premier League title, FA Cup, and Champions League triumph.
The 33-year-old defender played a pivotal role in Liverpool's dominance under manager Jurgen Klopp, earning praise for his reliability and skill. However, a series of injury setbacks, including an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in December 2023, have led to his decision to retire.
Matip's international career saw him represent Cameroon on 27 occasions, featuring in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
