Galatasaray took an early lead with Yunus Akgun's powerful half-volley in the 6th minute. Tottenham leveled the score at 1-1 thanks to 19-year-old Will Lankshear, who netted his debut senior goal in the 18th minute. However, Osimhen soon dominated, scoring twice before halftime. His first goal came in the 31st minute with a clever toe-poke, followed by a well-placed cushioned volley in the 39th minute, putting Galatasaray ahead 3-1 by the break.
Tottenham’s challenge grew harder in the second half when Lankshear was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the 60th minute. Yet, despite being down to ten men, Tottenham fought back with a goal from Dominic Solanke, who converted Pedro Porro's cross with a skillful flick in the 69th minute. However, Tottenham couldn't equalize, resulting in their first Europa League defeat of the season.
Reflecting on the match, Postecoglou expressed disappointment with Tottenham's first-half performance. He stated, “Obviously, disappointing result. First half wasn’t great, we just didn’t handle things well at all, particularly with the ball, just really wasteful and gave it away way too many times, unnecessarily. That allows them to get a foothold in the areas that they’re good at… So, disappointing outcome, unfortunately, brought on by a disappointing first half.” He praised his team’s resilience in the second half, noting they played some of their best football of the match despite being a man down.
Postecoglou also commended Tottenham’s young talents. On Lankshear’s red card, he acknowledged it stemmed from "a bit of over-enthusiasm," adding that the experience would help both Lankshear and Lucas Bergvall learn about the intensity of European away matches.
This defeat highlights Tottenham's ongoing challenge to maintain consistency in European competition, especially against top clubs like Galatasaray.
