Ballon d'Or Judge Resigns After Voting Oversight for Vinicius Jr.
Juha Kanerva, a journalist from Finland’s Ilta-Sanomat, has stepped down from the Ballon d'Or voting panel after admitting he forgot to include Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. in his top ten selections. This error came to light after it was revealed that, despite his outstanding performances, Vinicius was absent from Kanerva’s ballot.
Kanerva took responsibility for the mistake, acknowledging it as a "technical fault" in a post on social media, and announced his resignation from the Ballon d'Or voting committee. His departure comes after the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner was revealed to be Rodri of Manchester City, who triumphed by a narrow margin of 41 points over Vinicius Jr.
Kanerva announced on X that he will resign from the Ballon d'Or jury.
He wrote: 'This was my technical fault, for which I take responsibility. I am leaving my place as Ballon d'Or selector.'
Rodri’s Ballon d'Or victory is a significant achievement, reflecting his pivotal role in Manchester City's success and Spain's victory at UEFA EURO 2024.
