Enzo Maresca has explained the reasons behind Enzo Fernandez's absence from Chelsea's starting lineup in recent matches. Ahead of Chelsea's upcoming clash against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, Maresca commented, “They are human beings, and if you pay £100m, that is not my problem.”
He emphasized that just because a player comes with a hefty price tag, it does not guarantee that they will perform at their best in every game. “You want to buy me, then you pay that money. That does not mean that every game you have to be the best. At the end of the day, they are football players and they cannot always be at the top level.”
Maresca reassured that Fernandez's lack of playing time is not due to any issues with his performance. “At this moment Enzo is not playing, but there is no problem with Enzo,” he stated. He acknowledged that the high transfer fees can lead to unrealistic expectations from fans and the media. “The noise about Enzo is because clubs pay so much money for them; people expect they will always be the best. That is not so.”
The manager clarified that Fernandez's omission from the lineup is purely based on tactical preferences, favoring the physical attributes of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia over the Argentine midfielder.
