Marcelo's contract with Fluminense was terminated two months early after a touchline dispute with head coach Mano Menezes. 
During Fluminense’s match against Grêmio, Marcelo resisted Menezes’ substitution instructions, prompting the coach to bring on forward John Kennedy instead.
Marcelo had joined Fluminense on a two-year contract after leaving Olympiacos, where he briefly played following an illustrious 15-year career at Real Madrid. During his time in Spain, he secured 25 major trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles.
