Erling Haaland expressed his determination to overcome Manchester City's recent Champions League setback, posting on Twitter, "Only one way to move on from last night - work even harder and come back fighting from this." His statement followed City's challenging 4-1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon on November 5, 2024, at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.
In the game, Phil Foden initially put City ahead with a goal in the 4th minute. However, Sporting Lisbon staged a strong comeback, with Viktor Gyokeres leading the charge by scoring twice from penalties and once from open play, finding the net at the 38th, 49th, and 80th minutes. Maximiliano Araujo added to Sporting’s lead just after halftime, scoring in the 46th minute and securing a decisive victory for the Portuguese team.
As Manchester City looks to put this defeat behind them, their next opportunity for redemption will come in the Premier League against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the American Express Community Stadium.
