Robert Lewandowski Opens Up About Competing with Messi and Ronaldo
Robert Lewandowski, in a candid interview with Rio Ferdinand on his podcast "Rio Ferdinand Presents," supported by Qatar Airways, revealed his strategic approach of using Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as motivational benchmarks throughout his career. Despite competing with these football icons, Lewandowski emphasized that he never aimed to compare himself directly with them.
"I used them, yeah. I used them for sure, not as inspiration, but to try... to drive yourself, not to beat them, but to beat some kind of records, goals, the level that I achieved. Of course, I didn't want to compare with Lionel Messi or Cristiano, never as a football player, because, of course, they are on a different level, different worlds," Lewandowski remarked.
Reflecting on the Ballon d'Or award he missed out on in 2020 due to its cancellation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Lewandowski expressed his bewilderment and frustration. He stated, "At the time, I didn't understand why. All the leagues were being played, the Champions League was being played, and for me, it was like, why? I know football works sometimes like politics, if you have football, you have business. If you have a business, you have politics."
When asked if he would accept the award retroactively, Lewandowski affirmed, "Of course, I would. My achievements during that period remain valid, and I believe I deserved the recognition."
