The social media personality explained his actions in a video and written statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday, where he disclosed that he had recently been summoned to a police station for questioning about the post.
In his statement, VeryDarkMan recounted his experience, saying, "Back from the police station where I was interrogated based on the post I made wearing a costume that the police claim is similar to theirs.” He clarified that his actions were not intended as an attempt to "impersonate the police in any way" and offered a "sincere apology" to both the Nigeria Police Force and the office of the Inspector General of Police.
The influencer took the opportunity to advise the public to seek official approval before using attire that might resemble law enforcement uniforms. “You might want to use it for good, but there are others that might want to use it for bad,” he cautioned, adding that “it’s good to get full approval before using anything that might seem impersonating,” tagging @nigeriapoliceforce to emphasize his message.
Reflecting on the incident, VeryDarkMan shared that it had been a learning experience. “I learned a few things. We learn every day,” he remarked, explaining that his use of "CSP" was intended to mean "Chief Social Media Person." However, he noted that “the Nigeria Police has a rank called Chief Superintendent of Police,” which had contributed to the misunderstanding.
In closing, he reiterated his appeal to the public, urging them to be cautious and to “always seek permission from the police or other law enforcement agencies before using anything that might resemble their uniform.”
