Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, advancing to the semi-finals of the competition.
In the 24th minute, Darwin Núñez opened the scoring for Liverpool. After receiving a deflected pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had skillfully evaded two Southampton players deep in his own half, Núñez advanced into the box and finished with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
Núñez's celebration was notably pointed. In response to taunts from Southampton fans chanting "you're just a s--- Andy Carroll," he shushed the St. Mary's crowd and gestured that he couldn't hear them, effectively silencing the derogatory chants.
Harvey Elliott extended Liverpool's lead in the 32nd minute with a deflected effort, giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Southampton's Cameron Archer pulled one back in the 59th minute, but Liverpool maintained their lead to secure the win.
This victory propels Liverpool into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, keeping them on course to defend their title.
