Lawyer Claims Police Defy Court Order, Refuse Bail for Speed Darlington

Human rights attorney Deji Adeyanju has reported that the Nigerian Police Force continues to detain singer Darlington Okoye, known professionally as Speed Darlington, despite a Federal High Court order issued on December 23, 2024, granting him bail.

Speed Darlington was initially arrested in October 2024 following a defamation complaint filed by fellow artist Burna Boy. He was released on bail but was re-arrested on November 27, 2024, in Owerri, Imo State, for allegedly violating his bail conditions.

Adeyanju has accused the police of unlawfully prolonging Speed Darlington's detention by refusing to grant administrative bail or present him before a judge. He suggests that influential individuals may be influencing the police's actions, thereby obstructing the judicial process.

As of December 26, 2024, Speed Darlington remains in police custody, with his legal team continuing to advocate for his release in compliance with the court's directive.
