
Mexican wrestling legend Rey Misterio Sr., whose real name was Miguel Ángel López Días, has passed away at the age of 66. The announcement was made by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio (Miguel Aarón López Hernández), via a Facebook post on Friday, December 20, 2024.
Rey Misterio Sr. played a significant role in the world of professional wrestling, particularly within the lucha libre style. His career began in 1976 after transitioning from boxing, and he rose to prominence through his work with organizations such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. His international fame expanded after he participated in World Championship Wrestling's Starrcade event in 1990, alongside Konnan.
In addition to his in-ring accomplishments, Misterio Sr. was highly respected as a trainer. He mentored several notable wrestlers, including his nephew Rey Mysterio, Konnan, Psicosis, and his son. His contributions were recognized in 2006 when he was inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame.
The wrestling community mourns his loss, which comes shortly after the death of his brother, Roberto Gutierrez, adding to a series of recent family tragedies. Rey Misterio Sr.’s influence on professional wrestling remains profound, with his legacy living on through his trainees and the countless fans he inspired.
