Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has opened up about being approached with performance-enhancing drugs during his time at Chelsea.
This revelation follows the news that Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk failed a drug test earlier this week, leading to his provisional suspension by the Football Association.
Addressing the situation on the *Obi One Podcast*, Mikel expressed his support for Mudryk while highlighting the importance of personal responsibility in such cases. “For him and his family, I hope he is innocent. I remember back in my playing days, if someone offered me anything, my first question was, ‘What is this?’” he shared.
Mikel recounted moments when individuals tried to introduce him to substances they claimed would boost his performance. “People around you—friends or their acquaintances—might tell you something will give you an extra edge. But my response was always to question its legality and safety,” he explained. “I would tell them to stay away because I didn’t want to take any risks. Athletes must take responsibility for what they consume. As for Mudryk, he remains innocent until proven guilty.”
During his illustrious career at Chelsea, which spanned over a decade, Mikel played 372 matches across all competitions, including 249 Premier League appearances, and scored six goals. His time at the club was decorated with numerous titles, including two Premier League championships, four FA Cups, and a historic UEFA Champions League victory in 2012.
