Neal Maupay, currently on loan at Olympique Marseille from Everton, recently drew attention by mocking his parent club's struggles following their 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Maupay posted on social media platform X: "Whenever I'm having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile."
This remark incited strong reactions from Everton supporters, including former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew, who responded with explicit language.
Maupay's tenure at Everton has been underwhelming; he scored only one goal in 29 appearances during the 2022/23 season. Subsequently, he was loaned to Brentford and later to Marseille, where he has found better form, contributing to the team's current second-place standing in Ligue 1.
Everton is battling to avoid relegation, sitting 16th in the Premier League table. Maupay's comments have further strained his relationship with Everton fans, following previous incidents where he faced criticism from supporters.
