The incident occurred when Heung-Min Son scored directly from a corner kick in the 88th minute. Some felt Manchester United's goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, was obstructed by Tottenham players, making it difficult for him to prevent the goal. However, VAR was not available to review the incident, as it is only implemented from the semi-final stage of the competition.

The match began with Dominic Solanke opening the scoring for Tottenham in the 15th minute after a rebound from Pedro Porro's shot. Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham's lead immediately after halftime with a well-executed attacking move. Solanke added his second goal in the 54th minute, giving Tottenham a commanding 3-0 lead.

Manchester United fought back, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring in the 63rd minute after capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Tottenham's goalkeeper, Fraser Forster. Amad Diallo further reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 70th minute by intercepting a delayed clearance by Forster and finding the net.

Son's controversial goal restored Tottenham's two-goal advantage, but Jonny Evans scored a header in injury time to bring the final score to 4-3. Despite the late drama, Tottenham secured their spot in the semi-finals, while Manchester United was eliminated in a closely contested match.
