Fofana, a former captain of RC Lens, departed French football for Al Nassr in July 2023. During his time in Saudi Arabia, he spent the season on loan with Al-Ettifaq, where he recorded 27 appearances and scored twice.
The 29-year-old midfielder brings extensive experience to Rennes, including 22 caps for the Ivory Coast national team. His return to Ligue 1 is anticipated to bolster Rennes’ midfield options and provide valuable leadership, particularly as the club vies for success in both domestic and European competitions.
Fofana underwent a medical examination in Paris before finalizing the move, which also marks a reunion with Arnaud Pouille, the former CEO of Lens and now president of Rennes. His accomplishments include being named the best African player in Ligue 1 during the 2021–22 season and playing a pivotal role in Ivory Coast’s victory at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rennes announced the signing on January 1, 2025, and the midfielder is expected to join the team for training immediately. Fans are eager to see Fofana in action as he begins this new chapter in his career.
