The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Ghana has unveiled a new initiative that will allow students to retake their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers in January and February 2025.
This marks a significant shift from the existing system, where candidates had to wait for the next private exam cycle to resit their papers.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, shared this update during an interview on JoyNews' AM Show in Ghana. He explained that the initiative, referred to as WASSCE PC1, is designed to give candidates a quicker chance to improve their grades and avoid delays in advancing their academic journeys.
“Students who review their results and find they need to retake one or two papers now have until January 8th to register through WAEC’s website or at authorized internet cafés,” Kapi stated. He added that the exams would be conducted from January 24th to February 15th, 2025.
Additionally, the new system accommodates students whose results have been canceled, provided they are not barred due to malpractice. WAEC also plans to release chief examiners’ reports earlier than usual to help students better prepare for their exams.
Given the expected smaller number of participants, the resit exams will initially be conducted in regional capitals. WAEC has urged eligible candidates to register promptly to take advantage of this opportunity.
This initiative is expected to help students enhance their results more quickly, enabling them to meet the requirements for the next academic admission cycle without unnecessary delays.
