Former Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy has joined FC Zürich in Switzerland on a free transfer, following the termination of his contract with French Ligue 2 side Lorient. The 30-year-old French international has signed a contract with FC Zürich that runs until the summer of 2026.
FC Zürich's president, Ancillo Canepa, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating, "Of course, we are very pleased and also a little proud that we could sign such a high-quality player. He will be above all an important support for our young players."
Mendy's career has seen him play for several prominent clubs. He began his professional journey with Le Havre, before moving to Marseille, and later to Monaco, where he was part of the team that clinched the Ligue 1 title in the 2016-2017 season. In 2017, he transferred to Manchester City for a then-record fee for a defender, contributing to multiple Premier League title wins. After his tenure in England, Mendy returned to France, signing with Lorient in 2023. However, his time there was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 15 appearances.
FC Zürich is currently positioned 8th in the Swiss Super League and is striving to avoid relegation. The club anticipates that Mendy's experience and leadership will be invaluable assets as they navigate the remainder of the season.
