Chelsea endured a disappointing night at Villa Park as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in their Premier League encounter on February 22, 2025. Despite taking an early lead through Enzo Fernández, the Blues were unable to hold on, with Marco Asensio scoring twice in the second half to complete Villa’s comeback.
The match started positively for Chelsea when Pedro Neto delivered a precise cross in the 9th minute, allowing Fernández to slot home from close range. The visitors controlled possession for much of the first half and went into the break with a narrow lead.
However, Villa emerged from halftime with renewed energy, spurred by the introduction of Marcus Rashford. The England international played a key role in the equalizer, providing a cross for Asensio to finish in the 57th minute. Initially flagged offside, the goal was later confirmed after a VAR review.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Aston Villa found a late winner in the 89th minute. Rashford once again linked up with Asensio, whose shot was mishandled by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen, allowing the ball to roll into the net.
This defeat leaves Chelsea in sixth place, while Aston Villa moves just one point behind them in the Premier League table. The result adds pressure on Chelsea’s push for European qualification as the season progresses.
