Galatasaray has formally accused Fenerbahce's head coach, José Mourinho, of making racist remarks following a 0-0 draw between the two Turkish Super Lig rivals. The allegations stem from Mourinho's post-match comments, where he reportedly described the Galatasaray bench as "jumping around like monkeys" during a contentious moment in the match.
In response, Galatasaray issued a statement condemning Mourinho's remarks and announced their intention to initiate criminal proceedings against him. The club also plans to file official complaints with UEFA and FIFA, citing Mourinho's "persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people" since his tenure began at Fenerbahce.
The match, held in Istanbul, was officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, marking the first time in 55 years that a foreign referee was appointed for a Turkish Super Lig match. This decision came at the request of both clubs, aiming to mitigate recent controversies surrounding domestic officiating. Mourinho praised Vincic's performance, suggesting that a Turkish referee could have led to unfavorable outcomes for his team.
Fenerbahce and Mourinho have yet to release an official response to the allegations. This incident adds to a series of controversies involving Mourinho since his arrival in Turkey, including previous fines and suspensions related to his criticism of local match officials and the league.
